The village of Choli has two big churches and many
more ruins of old churches. The two big as well as
picturesque churches of the village are the one of
Archangel Michael and the one of Panagia Eleousa. You
can also see the ruins of three old chapels which were
dedicated to: Agios Aristos, Agios Georgios and Agia
Marina. The village is also blessed with holly water
which is running in an area of the village called Agia
Eleni (Saint Helen).
The church of Archangel Michael
The church of Archangel Michael is dated back to the
late 15th or the early 16th century. Its architecture
reveals that the construction of the church had taken
place in two different phases.
The church is single-aisled with a pointed arch and
a narthex which is even taller that the arch. The lower
part of the narthex is older than the arch, but we
should note that it is unknown if the narthex is older
than the church itself. On the other hand, it is known
that the west wall of the church was demolished in
order to join the narthex with the church. Due to this
demolition, the wall-paintings were destroyed. Some
archaeologists, who studied the walls and the remaining
parts of the wall-paintings, believe that the entire
painting depicted the Second Coming.
The access to the church is made through two entries:
the one is placed on the north side of the church and
the other one is on the narthex. The inner is decorated
with plenty of wall paintings which depict scenes from
the Jesus life, the Second Coming of Jesus Christ and
Archangel Michael. We must note that all the all paintings
are characterized by the Byzantine art with very little
west influence.
The church ends to an arch which is decorated with
six hierarchs divided into two groups, who phase the
centre of the arch. The six hierarchs are Spiridon,
Gregorios, Chrisostomos, Vasilios, Epifanios, Nikolaos.
The church of Archangel Michael is one of the most
important and beautiful ecclesiastic monuments of the
island, both from an architectural point of view as
well as its inner decoration.
The church of Panagia Eleousa
The church of Panagia Eleousa emerges in the southeast
of the village. It is a small church with arches
which is dated back to the 16th century.
In 1953, when a catastrophic earthquake happened in
the area, the church was seriously damaged. The inhabitants
of the village took action very soon and repaired the
damages. But even before this earthquake, another part
of the church had collapsed.
The inner of the church is decorated with wall-paintings
which were made just after the construction of the
church, in the 16th century. Some of these paintings,
especially those in the arch, are still visible to
this day. The wall paintings in the arch of the church
are divided into four zones: two wall paintings on
the south wall and two on the north part of the arch.
On the south part there are also the traces of a wall
painting depicting the presentation of Christ in the
Temple and the Baptism of Christ, and on the north
part traces of wall paintings of which the subject
is not identified.
Furthermore, on both the north and south wall there
are some figures of Saints (among them Archangel Michael
and Saint Nicolas).
We should also mention the two blind arches on the
north wall and three more on the south wall which were
probably tombs of some members of the community or
founders and donators of the church.
The chapel of Saint Aristos
The chapel of Saint Aristos emerges lonely and abandoned
on the north side of the village. It is 300 meters
away from the main church of the village.
According to some elder inhabitants of the village,
the chapel used to be very impressive and caused awe
and admiration for its simple but at the same time
imposing architecture as well as for its excellent
inner decoration. And to be more specific, the inner
of this ecclesiastic building was decorated with eighty
wall paintings and very old icons.
In older times the chapel was taken care of by monks
of the monastery of Oros Sina. The existence of the
specific chapel is verified by elder people who remember
seeing its ruins.
According to oral tradition, the demolition of the
church has taken place after the sold of some farms
to a new owner. The owner asked a Turk to realize the
demolition and it is said that three days later he
died.
The chapel of Saint George and Saint Marina
The chapel of Saint George and Saint Marina is built
on the south side of the village and 300 meters away
from the centre of the village. The access to these
two small chapels is very easy due to the new road
which was lately opened. The area is precipitate
and there are also many fountains along the slopes
of the mountains.
The two chapels are next to each other and the marks
of the abandonment are more than obvious. Both of them
were abandoned during the Turkish Occupation. Despite
their long loneliness, there are many traces of old
wall paintings.
According to tradition, the chapels were built on
the ruins of the ancient altar of the Goddess Artemis.
The holly water of Agia Eleni or Panagia
The holly water of Agia Eleni or Panagia springs in
the south part of the village. In older times, people
put around the fountain clothes as gifts to Virgin
Mary or the Saint. Many inhabitants said that people
who suffered from skin diseases were cured when spread
on their bodies dust from the fountain.
